Pipa(琵琶)

Pipa(琵琶)
Final Effect

This project reinterprets the traditional Chinese instrument, the pipa, as a mixed-media sculptural installation that bridges cultural symbolism, material experimentation, and spatial design. The pipa, one of China’s four classical instruments, embodies elegance, balance, and deep cultural heritage. Its teardrop silhouette, intricate carvings, and lyrical proportions inspired me to explore it not only as a musical instrument but also as a sculptural form rich with narrative potential.

Mood Board

To capture the essence of this form, I combined cardboard, plaster, foam board, and paper—materials chosen for both structure and symbolism. The installation’s blue-and-white color palette echoes Chinese porcelain, while hand-crafted peony motifs—rendered in both paper and embroidery—represent prosperity and grace. This piece became a synthesis of form, culture, and texture, transforming traditional craftsmanship into a contemporary visual dialogue.

The process, however, was filled with challenges. The greatest difficulty lay in constructing the curved back and teardrop shape of the pipa using rigid cardboard. After multiple trials, I achieved the curvature by layering cut segments and inserting foam board for both thickness and flexibility. Another major setback occurred when I applied plaster water over the cardboard structure—it softened and collapsed under the moisture. Forced to adapt, I reconstructed the sculpture using tinfoil reinforcement and plaster bandages, learning through failure how different materials interact and influence structure.

These unexpected challenges reshaped my creative mindset. I realized that problem-solving is an essential part of artistic practice, just as critical as concept and form. Every failed experiment became an opportunity to observe, adjust, and innovate.

Ultimately, Pipa represents more than a sculptural study—it is a personal reflection on resilience, adaptation, and the continuous dialogue between tradition and experimentation.
