Embroidery + Soft Sculpture

Embroidery + Soft Sculpture
Soft Sculpture Final Effect

This project explores the connection between embroidery techniques and soft sculpture construction, bridging traditional craft with contemporary form-making. The process unfolded in two sequential phases—first learning various hand-stitching and machine-sewing methods, then applying them to build a three-dimensional soft sculpture.

During the embroidery phase, I experimented with different stitches and thread types, discovering how fabric tension and layering could influence texture and structure. These experiences became essential for the next stage, where I explored celadon porcelain patterns and reinterpreted them into fabric forms. Translating the visual language of ceramics into textile sculpture allowed me to think deeply about how material and meaning can transform across mediums.

In the soft sculpture phase, I focused on 3D modeling and form translation, learning how to unfold paper patterns, construct with fabric, and adjust volumes through iterative testing. Converting flat designs into spatial works presented challenges—particularly in balancing proportion and maintaining stability—but each problem led to inventive solutions.

One of the most rewarding aspects of this project was realizing how much craftsmanship and creativity depend on experimentation. Many of my final design decisions emerged spontaneously during the making process, including changes to shape and surface to avoid repetitive forms. These moments of improvisation taught me that the best ideas often arise from mistakes, adjustments, and curiosity.

Ultimately, this chapter strengthened both my technical confidence and conceptual growth. It reminded me that making is not only about precision but also about discovering new possibilities through hands-on exploration and open-ended thinking.
