Green-Wood Cemetery: Wearable Fashion

Green-Wood Cemetery: Wearable Fashion
Mood Board

This collaborative studio project was inspired by Green-Wood Cemetery in New York, a site rich with history, symbolism, and art. Our goal was to create a wearable piece that translated the emotional and visual language of memorial spaces into fashion design. In the early phase, we explored broad themes—life cycles, memory, and spirituality—before focusing on burial art as our core inspiration.

Sketch

Throughout this process, I developed a wide range of new skills: researching conceptual sources, sketching garment silhouettes, operating sewing machines, and working with textiles. Beyond the technical learning, I gained a deeper appreciation for how funeral art reflects the dialogue between the living and the dead, blending reverence with creative reinterpretation.

As the project leader, I faced several key challenges. Managing teamwork was the first—balancing fairness, communication, and efficiency. To keep our group organized, I built a task system on Miro and facilitated weekly updates, which improved collaboration dramatically. The second challenge was refining our theme. When my initial “cycle of life” idea didn’t resonate, I quickly shifted direction toward burial art, which re-energized the group and inspired new ideas.

Production brought further obstacles: limited access to the cemetery forced us to relocate our photoshoot, adapt our storyboard, and film under time and weather constraints. Despite these difficulties, the process taught me adaptability and quick decision-making under pressure.

Ultimately, this project became more than a fashion assignment—it was a creative journey that merged conceptual research, teamwork, and visual storytelling. I learned how to connect emotional meaning with material form and how design can serve as a bridge between art, memory, and human experience.
